Kentucky Bluegrass care calendar for zone 4

Cold continental winter with a meaningful growing season April–October. Cool-season grasses dominate; buffalo grass viable in the western half (semi-arid). Snow mold is a real concern: last mow of the year should drop the lawn to 2–2.5 inches before the first hard freeze.

Kentucky bluegrass is the iconic cool-season lawn: fine-bladed, deep emerald-blue under fertility, and the only common species that spreads aggressively by rhizome (so it self-repairs from divots and dog spots). The trade-off is heat sensitivity: by mid-July in zone 7 it browns and goes semi-dormant unless irrigated.
