When to water Zoysia in zone 6

Recommended window

Do it in May–September

What to do, in plain language

Water Zoysia in zone 6 during active growth, deep and infrequent. Target 1 inch per week including rainfall, applied in 1–2 morning sessions. Warm-season grasses are far more drought-tolerant than cool-season; bermuda, bahia, and buffalo can survive 4+ weeks without irrigation by going dormant and recovering on the next rain. Train roots deep with infrequent watering; expect 4–6 inch root depth at peak season.

FAQ

Can I water my Zoysia lawn outside the window?
You can, but you get diminishing returns. The window above tracks active growth in zone 6: applying outside it either wastes product (dormant turf cannot use it) or harms the grass (stressed turf reacts poorly to disruption). If you are off by a week or two, no harm done; off by a month, wait until next year.
What if my zone is between two values, like zone 6a vs 6b?
Zone 7 is the clearest example. Subzone-shift matters less for watering than for any other task: soil-moisture targets are absolute (~1 inch/week including rain), not calendar-driven. Use a tuna-can rain gauge, not the calendar. A general rule still applies: 6a runs 1–2 weeks behind 6b at the spring shoulder, so in 6a treat the late edge of the window above as the right call; in 6b, treat the early edge. We may break out subzones in a future build.
Is this water schedule different on shaded versus full-sun Zoysia lawns?
Shade lawns usually need less water than full-sun turf because evapotranspiration is lower under canopy, but the trees compete for soil moisture, so monitor the actual probe depth rather than dialing back blindly. The window above is for an average mixed-exposure lawn: adjust intensity (rate, frequency, height) for the shade fraction of your turf, not the window itself.
Where does this timing come from?
Each entry is grounded in published university extension calendars (TAMU AgriLife, UGA Extension, NCSU TurfFiles, Penn State, UMN, UC IPM, UF/IFAS, Oklahoma State). The source for this page is cited above. We adjust by zone where the source publishes state-only calendars, using the state's modal USDA zone as the reference point.
How does water timing change in a wet or dry year?
Drought years: prioritize roots over color. Let cool-season lawns go summer-dormant (brown but alive: the crowns survive 4–6 weeks of dryness); resume irrigation when nights drop below 65°F. Wet years: turn off the automatic irrigation entirely and let nature do the work. Either way, watch the soil: calendar-based timing is a starting point, not a guarantee, and the Zoysia you actually have in zone 6 responds to what is happening at the root zone this season.
