When to fertilize Zoysia in zone 7
Recommended window
Do it in May–August
What to do, in plain language
Zoysia in zone 7 is a warm-season grass, fertilize it when soil is warm and the lawn is actively growing. Hold off until full green-up (typically 3 weeks after the last frost) so you are not feeding dormant turf. Apply at 1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft every 6–8 weeks through the active season; total annual nitrogen targets 3–5 lb N per 1,000 sq ft for bermuda, less for zoysia and St. Augustine. Stop fertilizing 6 weeks before the average first frost in your zone, late-season nitrogen forces tender growth that gets killed by cold weather and invites disease.
FAQ
- Can I fertilize my Zoysia lawn outside the window?
- You can, but you get diminishing returns. The window above tracks active growth in zone 7: applying outside it either wastes product (dormant turf cannot use it) or harms the grass (stressed turf reacts poorly to disruption). If you are off by a week or two, no harm done; off by a month, wait until next year.
- What if my zone is between two values, like zone 7a vs 7b?
- A 7a lawn shifts every fertilizer application about two weeks later in spring and two weeks earlier in fall than the 7b sibling at the same zone number: match your last-frost date, not the zone label. A general rule still applies: 7a runs 1–2 weeks behind 7b at the spring shoulder, so in 7a treat the late edge of the window above as the right call; in 7b, treat the early edge. We may break out subzones in a future build.
- Is this fertilize schedule different on shaded versus full-sun Zoysia lawns?
- Heavy-shade lawns need less nitrogen in total because growth is slower and excess feed drives disease (especially leaf spot and brown patch). Skip the early-spring application if shade is below 4 hours of direct sun. The window above is for an average mixed-exposure lawn: adjust intensity (rate, frequency, height) for the shade fraction of your turf, not the window itself.
- Where does this timing come from?
- Each entry is grounded in published university extension calendars (TAMU AgriLife, UGA Extension, NCSU TurfFiles, Penn State, UMN, UC IPM, UF/IFAS, Oklahoma State). The source for this page is cited above. We adjust by zone where the source publishes state-only calendars, using the state's modal USDA zone as the reference point.
- How does fertilize timing change in a wet or dry year?
- Drought years: cut the summer application rate in half and water it in deeply, or skip entirely on drought-dormant warm-season turf. Wet years: stick to the schedule but watch for nitrogen leaching after heavy rain: the lawn may need a small make-up dose. Either way, watch the soil: calendar-based timing is a starting point, not a guarantee, and the Zoysia you actually have in zone 7 responds to what is happening at the root zone this season.
