Lawn Care Timing Guide

Task · covered for 10 grass types× 9 zones

When to dethatch your lawn

Remove the layer of dead grass, roots, and stems sitting between the soil and the green blades. Done with a manual rake on small lawns, a power rake or vertical mower (verticutter) on larger ones.

Why timing matters: Dethatching tears at the crown of the plant: the lawn has to be in active growth to recover quickly. Dethatching dormant turf delays green-up and invites disease.

FAQ

Is dethatch the same task for cool-season and warm-season grasses?
Mechanically yes, you do the same thing, but the window is completely different. Dethatching tears at the crown of the plant: the lawn has to be in active growth to recover quickly. Dethatching dormant turf delays green-up and invites disease. Cool-season dethatch concentrates in fall; warm-season dethatch concentrates in late spring through summer.
What if I'm in a transition zone where both grass types grow?
Look up the schedule for the species you actually have, not the zone. A Bermuda lawn in zone 7 follows the warm-season calendar; a tall fescue lawn 50 feet away in the same zone follows the cool-season calendar. The species drives the schedule, the zone just shifts it by a few weeks.
How does dethatch timing change in a wet or dry year?
Most lawns only need dethatching every 2–4 years; thatch over 0.5" is the trigger. Stolon-spreading grasses (bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine) build thatch faster than bunch-type grasses (tall fescue, perennial rye).
