Lawn Care Timing Guide

Task · covered for 10 grass types× 9 zones

When to overseed your lawn

Spread fresh seed over an existing lawn to fill in thin spots and out-compete weeds. Cool-season lawns overseed in fall; warm-season lawns either overseed perennial ryegrass for winter color, or leave the warm-season turf dormant.

Why timing matters: Seed germination needs consistent soil temperature plus moisture: overseed in the wrong window and the seed dries out, gets cooked by midday sun, or rots before it sprouts.

FAQ

Is overseed the same task for cool-season and warm-season grasses?
Mechanically yes, you do the same thing, but the window is completely different. Seed germination needs consistent soil temperature plus moisture: overseed in the wrong window and the seed dries out, gets cooked by midday sun, or rots before it sprouts. Cool-season overseed concentrates in fall; warm-season overseed concentrates in late spring through summer.
What if I'm in a transition zone where both grass types grow?
Look up the schedule for the species you actually have, not the zone. A Bermuda lawn in zone 7 follows the warm-season calendar; a tall fescue lawn 50 feet away in the same zone follows the cool-season calendar. The species drives the schedule, the zone just shifts it by a few weeks.
How does overseed timing change in a wet or dry year?
Cool-season overseed windows assume soil temps are dropping into the 50–65°F band; warm-season ryegrass overseed assumes the bermuda or zoysia base is heading into dormancy. We list both.
